Sibling Rivalry 2.0– Rat City gets 2 wins over Rose City

Everyone loves encores, even when they’re 170-odd miles away. In a repeat of February’s Rat City-Rose City Home-Team 4×4, all four Rat City home teams travelled down to Portland for an 8-team, 4-bout rematch. All bouts were “mini-bouts”, so just one 30-minute period each to maximize the interleague action!

Like February, the results were split 2-2, so it seems that these two sister leagues might not ever grow out of their rivalry…

Bout Recap: Bay Area over Rat City All-Stars 103-92

Considering the green, purple, green, gold (and did we mention GREEN?) in the house and calls of “Show us your hits,” it was a veritable Mardi Gras in Seattle for Rat City’s April bout! After the exciting Rain of Terror (green)/ Bruising Altitude (purple), the Rat City All-Stars (green) were about to face off against the Bay Area Derby Girls (BAD) All-Stars (gold) before a thundering crowd (GREEN!) eager to see the team’s Key Arena debut. Of course, no beads would be given out tonight, just a W for one of the teams to count toward WFTDA’s Western Region ranking.

Two whistles blew and Carmen Getsome was off against BAD’s Astronaughty. Bay Area was the first to score with a quick 3-0. Carmen was back on the track in jam 3 putting up an 8-0 run (with the help of blockers X-Khan, Glitter, Shedonist, and ReAnimateHer) before getting sent to the box at the end of the jam. BAD quickly made up those points the next time on the track, capitalizing on the power jam opportunity with an 8-1 run, making the second lead change of the game. Score 11-9, Bay Area.

Just 10minutes in, the tone for the bout was already set—tight defense on both sides allowing only razor-thin differential and capitalizing on power jam opportunities. Because of two Bay Area 10-0 runs, the scoreboard didn’t reflect how close the game was. Score 60-30, Bay Area, end of the first half.

From the skybox perch, one might guess that the Rat City All-Stars’ halftime talk was an epic reminder that green means go. Within 10 minutes of the second half’s first whistle, Rat City had retaken the lead in a 6 jam, 35-4 run, with Carmen Getsome, Kamikaze Kim, and ReAnimateHer putting points on the board. Aggressive blocking was led by Hard Cora, X-Khan, and Wile E. Peyote and the front of the pack was kept on lockdown by stalwarts Juliet Bravo, Valtron 3000, and Primp Daddy. Score 65-64, Rat City, 20 minutes left in the second half.

But almost as soon as soon as the Rat City All-Stars figured out how to unlock the BAD Girl defense (and getting up to an 8 point lead) the girls in gold were at it again—with Demanda Riot and belleRIGHThooks playing the roles of mad dog and human wrecking ball (respectively), and Auntie Christ a brutal last line of defense. Add to that a 21-point run by Bay Area jammers Ivy Profane and Astronaughty drove another lead change. Score 89-76, Bay Area with about 10 minutes to go.

The back and forth continued as the clock wound down: 3-1 for Bay Area, 5-0 for Rat City, 4-0 BAD, 4-3 BAD, 0-0 (equipment failure). With 3 minutes to go and an 11-point deficit, Juliet Bravo scored another 5-0 for 98-92 BAD, to make it in reach in one more jam (after 58 minutes of this game, only the most fervent optimist would say a double digit differential was still really in one jam’s reach). Disappointingly for the 5,000+ Rat City fans who’d been abusing their vocal chords for the past 3 hours, Bay Area’s Astronaughty was quickly called lead. For insurance (as scoreboards are known to lie mid-jam), she went for a scoring pass after the period clock had ran out, ending the game 103-92, Bay Area.

MVPs were named to Rat City’s Wile E. Peyote and Bay Area’s Demanda Riot.

Bout Recap: Denver’s Bruising Altitude over Rain of Terror, 107-75

With six games (and five wins) under their belt in 2011, the Rat City’s Rain of Terror proved that they’re ready for prime time. And by “prime time,” we mean making their Seattle debut in front of more than 5,000 screaming fans at the Key Arena in a full-length battle of the B-Teams against Denver Roller Dolls’s Bruising Altitude.

Denver was first (and fast!) out of the gate, with a 12-0 run in the opening four jams. These were textbook “hit-it-and-quit-it” jams, with their speedy jammers Kendra Blood, Gator Dunn (both members of Denver’s Mile High Club as well) and Ajax calling it off before the Rain of Terror could score. Solid blockers like Kimmy Kimmy Bang Bang and Shannon Ball were part of Denver’s heavy defense—keeping Rat City’s jammers trapped and re-engaging her when she got past. Rat City got on the board in jam 6, when Muffstache was able to make a scoring pass while Denver’s jammer spent some time in the box. Score 16-3 Denver, 10 minutes in.

However, that momentum was short-lived as the Rain of Terror got into some jammer penalty trouble, giving Brusing Altitude 2 minutes of power jams. Despite aggressive play by Killah Kelly and Moe YaDown (both, quite impressively, living up to their names), Denver managed a 17-point run in two jams, bringing the score to 33-3.

Just when things started to look the most bleak for the Rain of Terror, jammer Missile America capitalized her power jam opportunity with an 18-0 run, aided by a solid pack in Sara Problem, Belle Tolls, Betty Ford Galaxy, and Fighty Almighty. Score 33-21 Denver, 15 minutes in the first half.

But as soon as Rain of Terror got any momentum started, Bruising Altitude was quick to remind them to put their seatbelts back on. With the exception of a 10-0 jam by Fighty whose strong pack of Killah, Moe, Penny Racer, and Eddie Shredder were able to keep the Denver jammer stuffed to allow for multiple passes, the end of the first half was much like the start: quick hit-it-and-quit-it runs by Denver’s trio of jammers. Score 63-34 Denver, end of the first half.

The second half started much like the first with Denver on the board first, however the both teams ramped up their play for a more competitive second half. The Rat City packs were able to put a tighter lock down on Denver offense, giving their jammers a much better lead jam percentage than in the first. A 9-0 run midway through the half brought the Rain of Terror within 25 points at 77-52, but Denver completely shut down the Rat City jammers for the next 7 jams, inching their way up to their largest lead in the game at 98-52 with about 8 minutes to play.

Though it might have been a bit too late, the Rain of Terror fought to the finish with a 23-9 run. Bruising Altitude’s first half lead proved to be sufficient, as they only out-scored Rain of Terror by 3 points in the half. Final score: 107-75, Denver.

MVPs were awarded to each team’s top jammers, Missile America for Rain of Terror and Gator Dunn for Bruising Altitude.

Bay Area, Denver get wins over Rat City travel teams

In our April double header, the Rat City Rollergirls hosted teams from the Bay Area Derby Girls and Denver Roller Dolls. Both of our visitors scored wins over the Rat City teams.

In the opening bout, Rat City’s Rain of Terror played Denver’s Bruising Altitude. Bruising Altitude was first to score and held the lead for the whole game. Rain of Terror fought to the finish and had a very strong second half. Final score 107-75.

The second bout featured Rat City All-Stars and the Bay Area Derby Girls from San Francisco. Bay Area’s remarkable defense and ability to capitalize on power jam opportunities put them at 60-30 going into half time. An aggressive run to start off the second half gave the All-Stars the ability to make up some ground, and then some, retaking the lead within 10 minutes of the start of the period. The rest of the game was a back-and-forth nail-biter, but it was ultimately Bay Area’s bout: Final score: 103-92.

Season 7 Team Preview: Rat City All-Stars

It’s only early April, but the Rat City All-Stars already have 5 games under your collective belt, including 3 against DNN-power-ranked top-10 teams.  What have you, as both a captain and All-Star player, learned from the games thus far this season?

Well unfortunately, I sustained a significant knee ligament (MCL) injury in February which kept me from skating at Wild West Showdown.   Therefore, I actually ran the bench in that tournament which gave me some unique insight.  Our team has stellar players and I’m proud of everyone.  Our defense is strong and with a number of newer players, teamwork has been a major focus.  We’ve also learned how penalties can devastate a game outcome and have also worked hard to bring those under control.  We’ve played some high level games already and have learned some valuable lessons that we hope to take into our game against BAD next Saturday.

As a new team captain, can you share a little about your training plans and goals for the season?

Well, I was a captain on my previous home team back in Cleveland, Ohio.  After that, I promised myself that I would never captain again as it’s a ton of work.  But…look what happened?!  I love this team and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of athletes who are also very fun people.  I wanted an opportunity to return to the championships with Rat City (our last trip was 2008).  I can tell you that we are training hard this year with a focus on skating skills and strategy as well as athletic conditioning and our mental game.  We’re taking a very balanced approach.  The early part of the season involves learning to work with the new people and finding our groove as a new team as obviously there are changes in team members each season.  In addition, we have increased our practice time and have worked hard on and off the track to prepare for all of our games.  Each of these games is a stepping stone and learning experience that will hopefully lead us to the WFTDA Championships this year—our ultimate goal.

There are a number of new faces on the All-Star team this year, in both skaters who are new to Rat City and skaters who have developed into All-Star caliber skaters. How has the team evolved since last year? Who should fans keep their eyes out for?

We are lucky to have new transfer skaters Glitter Hitter from Santa Cruz and Corre Caminos (the roadrunner!) from Utah.  In addition, we have nationally known Goodie Two Skates as a transfer from Rose City Rollers.  Newer skaters to the team that have come from within Rat City include Trouble Loves Mimi and Shorty Ounce.  I can’t tell you what a phenomenal addition all of these skaters have been to our team!  The fans should keep their eye on ALL of these new girls!  Corre is our newest jammer and fans have already had a taste of how she can rack up points and penetrate the defense.  Blockers Mimi, Shorty and Glitter are a force out there and I feel sorry for anyone that has to take a hit from one of them!

As someone who’s followed derby for a while, Bay Area is always a dangerous and unpredictable team and this is their first All-Star bout since the 2010 WFTDA Championships in Chicago. Can you tell fans a little bit more about your opponent?

Bay Area is a phenomenal team that can never be underestimated.  They went through all of 2010 on an upward trajectory and absolutely blew people away with their performance at Western Regionals last year which earned them a much coveted trip to the WFTDA Championships (only 3 teams get selected from the highly competitive Western Region).  They are also a very fun and flashy team that love to show off a little bling.  In Rat’s last matchup against BAD during August of 2010, we lost by a single point.  So I can promise the Rat City fans that we are in this game to win it!  With a hot matchup like this, there is SURE to be some excellent, hard hitting and strategic roller derby.  This bout is sure to deliver to derby fans everywhere!

Any additional thoughts about Saturday’s game and the upcoming season?

The All-Stars are very excited to bring awesome derby to Key Arena for our fans.  As far as this season goes, each of these games is simply a stepping stone on our march toward Western Regionals and the WFTDA Championships.  Each game should be taken seriously and lessons should be learned each time we take the track.  Every game that we play is a dress rehearsal and preparation for our ultimate goal which is our return to the Championships!

Rain of Terror, Rat City’s secondary travel team, has existed for a number of years and been evolving ever since, but this is the first bout in front of a big Seattle audience. Can you tell us a little more about the 2011 team?

Rain of Terror 2011 (RoT) is possibly the most diverse team Rat City has had to date. Our group has skaters ranging all the way from Season 7 fresh meat (Grave Danger’s Stella Borracha) up to long-standing veterans (Sockit Wenches’ Moe YaDown, Throttle Rocket’s Fighty Almighty). When I look at the skaters and their skill level, I’m honestly dumbfounded at the ability we have as a team and as a league to be lucky enough to put together a team of aggressive, hard-working skaters who are ready to represent Rat City.

We have former All-Stars, future All-Stars, and hands down hard-working, aggressive skaters who have dedicated themselves to the sport. Most of the team has not stopped skating since September 2009, and that is something to brag about! You know the names and faces of the Rain of Terror if you’re a Rat City fan. Missile America, Sevier, and Muffstache are just a few of our current stand-outs. I feel that this team is where fans will see their favorites playing both familiar and unfamiliar positions on the track. RoT has definitely allowed some of the home teams’ better and lesser known players to stand out and step up; and they have. It’s been amazing watching my teammates’ growth.  

As a new captain, can you share a little about the team’s training plans and goals for the season?
 
We’re fortunate to have a strong group of leaders that work together very cohesively. I’m just the co-captain. My Captain, Nikole Plated, Head Coach Sheeza Brickhouse, and Assistant Coach Mona Agony (all Grave Danger) are instrumental parts of what keeps RoT running. Since we are transitioning in the derby community beyond an ad-hoc team and into a formal travel team, we’re taking our first year in stride. Our goals this year are more broad than your standard A-Team or even a longer-standing B-Team. We’ve discussed traveling as much as possible and playing as many competitive B-Teams as we can and on-the-rise A-Teams. We try to mix the level of competitive play with our general attitude and outlook for having an outstanding time on the track as individuals and a team and growing and building Rain of Terror to be a force within Rat City, the West and eventually the WFTDA. 

In a lot of ways, the expansion of secondary-travel team level play completely echoes the first burst of interleague play back in 2006. For example—B-Team games aren’t covered as widely as All-Star games, there isn’t a WFTDA-initiated requirement for roster consistency, and each league approaches their B-Team makeup differently. How do you chose your match-ups to ensure a good, competitive experience for both teams and for fans?

Honestly, we’re still feeling the system out. Several of the West’s surrounding leagues have more established B-Teams than we do. Some only have A-Teams. We are doing our best to mix up our games and scrimmages with anyone and everyone within our reach. What you’ll notice on RoT is that some of our primary jammers and blockers may not play the same positions on their home teams. This is their opportunity to hone their skills and not only improve their skills on RoT, but bring their increased ability right back to their home teams for an even more diverse style of play.

Who knows where we’ll end up, but we have begin talking about our desire to help B-Teams maintain a strong presence withing WFTDA very soon. Stay tuned…

So yeah, Denver. What are your expectations going into this game? How has the team prepared for the big Key Arena debut?
 
We expect a challenging, hard-hitting, strategy heavy game. Denver’s program is known for finding and honing new, loophole strategies to keep ahead of their opponents and smart game play, and we don’t expect anything less. We’ve increased the number of practices our skaters attend each week, extended the length of practice times, have been scrimmaging the Rat City All-Stars and any other teams we can schedule time with, and have been working on specific strategies for some time. We’ve been anticipating this game for months and we’re ready to lay it all out in KeyArena.

The April 16 bout is Rain of Terror’s first big bout in Seattle, but can you tell us a little bit more about your games thus far this year? Also, what’s the rest of your season looking like? Any big games on the horizon?

Our schedule has been insane—in the best possible way! We’ve been packed full of games since the start of the year. In January, we went to Fairbanks, Alaska to play Fairbanks and Rage City (Anchorage). That trip was epic. We had an amazing time with amazing girls. And the following weekend, we went up to Vancouver for a bout against the Terminal City All-Stars. In February we played Dockyard Derby Dames’ Wave of Mutilation. Those were all bouts against other leagues’ all-star teams.

The morning after our February Key Arena bout with Rose City’s home teams, we scrimmaged Portland’s Axles of Annihilation. In March, we played Jet City’s B52s and an All-Star mash-up team, High Octane at Wild West Showdown. In June we’ll play the B52s again, likely twice, and we’ll go down to Portland to play the Axles. This summer we may also travel to Eastern Washington. I think that’s all that’s officially on the books, but there’s always more around the corner. We like to keep busy and train hard.

Bout Recap: Throttle Rockets shoot down Sockit Wenches, 116-76

What a difference a few months makes… If you’d asked anyone who last saw the Sockit Wenches win the season opener mini-tournament which team would be the favorite to win between them and the Throttle Rockets in March, smart money probably would be on last year’s champions in blue. But when one combines some roster changes, some injuries, and not-quite-quantifiable factor of a team gelling, it’d throw a wrench in the works for anyone who made predictions back in January. 

Possibly in homage to their coach, the Wenches first drew blood with a quick 1-0 by X-Khan followed by a 5-0 by Juliet Bravo. However, in the next jam, new Throttle Rocket Eva Dead picked up 5-0, making it a one-point game. While one-point games are pretty common in the first few jams, this back-and-forth “anybody’s game” dynamic early on would be the tone for most of the bout. A 5-0 run by TR rookie Luna Negra in jam 6 (aided by a ferocious pack of blockers in Fighty Almighty, Hard Cora, IRockit, and Killah Kelly) made for the first lead change of the night at 16-11, TRs. The Sockit Wenches, of course, would have none of that, and sprightly Penny Racer made an 8-0 run while Clobberin’ Mame, Trouble Loves Mimi, Moe YaDown and Squirrel! kept the always slippery Eva Dead trapped. 19-16, Wenches. This, derby fans, was a Game. 

As a testament to how much of a Game this bout had become, the TRs went on a 7-jam streak of getting lead jammer calls, but managed only an 18-8 run (third lead change in that run, by the way). Heavy defense was the story in the first half—multiple scoring passes were few and far between, and two or three point differentials were often the case.With the exception of Sirius Mischief’s 8-0 during this run, this was a game of teams eking out points when, where, and how they could get them. 34-28, TRs with less under 10 minutes in the period. 

However, three points and a lead jam call for Wench Caddie Smack, soon followed by a 10-0 jam by Sevier (both jammers’ first times wearing the star for the night) was enough for a momentum shift and another lead change (four now), leaving it 42-37, Wenches at the half. 

Coming out of the locker room, the Throttle Rockets went on a tear: a 16-0, three-jam run for the fifth lead change of the game. The Wenches responded with 7-0 in jam 4, but an 18-0 run by Luna Negra (who was on track, and got, a 100% lead-jam percentage for the night) gave the TRs the biggest lead either team had thus far that night at 71-49. Her veteran pack of Fighty, IRockit, Slutnik, and Valtron3000 was able to hold in the Wenches’ jammer and control the light pack, allowing for the biggest score of the game. It looked like the ladies in blue might make another run for it. A few jams after Luna’s big run-up, the Wench pack of Rebel Belle, X-Khan, Moe and Mimi helped jammer go-to girl Juliet Bravo rack up a 15-0 power jam to 74-65 with about 15minutes to go. 

Apparently that was too close for comfort for the Throttle Rockets, who proceeded to turn on the afterburners. Except for another Bravo tour-de-force jam with both teams fielding light packs, the rest of the game was all TR, and they went on a 42-11 run—taking advantage of boxed Wench jammers and dominating the pack play—to win 116-76. 

Both teams awarded MVP to their opponents’ most tenacious jammers: Throttle Rockets’ Eva Dead and Sockit Wenches’ Penny Racer. 

The next home team matchups are at our May 14 bout. The Sockit Wenches play Grave Danger and the Throttle Rockets play Derby Liberation Front. Bout Recap: Grave Danger draws DLF blood, 156-85

After two terrifically successful expo bouts, the Rat City Rollergirls kicked of the 2011 league season with a pair of action-packed full-length bouts between the teams that you’ve come to love over the past seven seasons. 

 The first bout of the evening saw last year’s runners-up, Grave Danger, pitted against a Derby Liberation Front on the rise. The bout opened with a pair of 2011 Rat City All-Star jammers on the line: veteran Carmen Getsome in red against rookie Corre Caminos in green. DLF scored first with a quick 2-0 for Corre, but Grave Danger’s ReAnimate Her responded back with 3-0 over DLF’s Goodie Two Skates in jam 2. After an 8-8 in jam 3 (with a jammer swap to boot), Grave Danger ignited their offense, locked down their defense, and went on a merciless 9 jam 60-3 run. The Danger packs were consistent and unyielding, with heavy defense led by sHedonist, Muffstache and Nikole Plated. Along with the usual suspects on the jammer line, Grave Danger’s Shorty Ounce, quickly becoming one of the league’s top utility players, scored a 15-0 jam during that run. 

With about 10 minutes to go in the half, DLF capitalized on a boxed Danger jammer to start their own 17-8 run. Kitty Kamikaze, Corre Caminos, Goodie Two Skates, and DLF rookies Lucinda Pack and AviHater all put up points during that streak to close the half 81-30. 

DLF came out of the break on fire with a 4-0 by Corre Caminos and a strong 7-0 by Lucinda Pack. However, by jam 3, Danger’s blockers were out of the penalty box revolving door and the full pack of blockers—Sara Problem, Carmen Getsome, Scarlet Leather, and sHedonist—were able to force a major on the DLF jammer, and control the light DLF pack, (two blockers also spent time in the box) to create a power jam for ReAnimate Her. ReAnimate Her’s five scoring passes were the start of another dominant Danger run: 43-5, taking the score to 124-46. 

Despite the clock ticking down and the gap widening, DLF kept fighting. The Rat City revolutionaries turned up their offense and tightened up their defense, with strong packs led by Glitter and Foxy Throwdown and impressive play by rookies Rumble Fist and Seditious Heart. DLF continued to mix up their jammer lineups, adding veteran blocker Ivana Clobber to the rotation with some success. However, it seemed that every advance was answered by the team in red. Grave Danger had the edge in experience—both in playing the game and playing together—and while DLF showed huge strides, it wasn’t enough this time. Final score, Grave Danger 156- Derby Liberation Front 85.
 
Both teams awarded MVP to their opponents’ most relentless blockers: Katarina Whip for Grave Danger and Glitter for DLF.

All-Star, Rain of Terror bouts April 16th

No, it’s not the end of the world. It’s the beginning of defeat as our Nationally ranked Rat City All-Star team and Rain of Terror, best of the rest, compete against B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls and Denver Roller Dolls, Bruising Altitude on April 16th at the KeyArena, presented by Chinook Book.

First Up

They say April showers bring May flowers, but Seattle’s bring a Rain of Terror as the Rat City Rollergirls “best of the rest” team competes against the Denver Roller Dolls, Bruising Altitude in the first game of the night.

Rain of Terror is the elite B travel team of RCRG and with their rapidly increased skills, ability to play hard and will to win have found them stomping out their competition along the PNW from Alaska to Vancouver to Bremerton in 2011.
Now it’s time to do it on their home turf.

Don’t miss this showdown when the Rain of Terror takes on the Denver Roller Dolls Bruising Altitude.

Best for Last

Rat City Rollergirls ALL-STAR team kicked off the 2011 Season with a 122-66 victory over Detroit in what was an epic show of skill and versatility that comes with the veteran cast of the RCRG ALL-STAR team.  With the addition of some key rookies on this year’s roster, the ALL-STAR team is ready to give B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls a run for their money.

The ALL-STARS played B.A.D in August of 2010 where they lost by a one point deficit (108-107) so you can rest assured this game is going to be one of high intensity, heavy strategy and sheer determination to show San Francisco how Seattle does derby on their home turf.

Both teams are nationally ranked WFTDA teams, with RCRG always finding their spot in the top ten, finishing 5th in WFTDA Western Region and ranking 6th nationally at the end of the 2010 Season.  With rankings fluctuating like the wind in the 2011 Season, this bout will bring together two of the top-rated WFTDA teams on the West Coast.

Rat City All-Stars have a leg-up since they started their season early and are already in high-gear for power rankings. B.A.D starts their 2011 Season on April 16 at the KeyArena as they try to defend against the Rat City ALL-STARS.

Grave Danger, Throttle Rockets take home wins!

In the first bout for the 2011 home season standings, Grave Danger and the Throttle Rockets brought home wins.

Grave Danger beat the Derby Liberation Front 156-85. DLF awarded MVP to Katarina Whip and Danger awarded MVP to Glitter.

In the second bout of the evening, the Throttle Rockets defeated Season 6 and January Charity Bout Champions, the Sockit Wenches. The score was 116-76 Throttle Rockets. The Wenches awarded MVP to Eva Dead, and the TRs named Penny Racer MVP.

Our next season play bout is in May and the matchups are DLF vs. Throttle Rockets and Grave Danger vs. Sockit Wenches. Season 7 Team Preview: Sockit Wenches

Oh gosh! Our Rat City Rollergirls league season starts TOMORROW! Your intrepid RCRG reporters talked with members of all four home teams to get a sense of how they’ve been getting ready for the 2011 season. Ima Handful from the Sockit Wenches took a few minutes to tell RCRG fans what the league sweetheart have been up to lately. Welcome Sockit Wenches Pit Crew to an amazing 2011 season! Fueled by their Season 6 Championship title, the Sockit Wenches have trained in overdrive: learning new strategy, scrimmaging teams across the Northwest and pushing themselves to be smarter, faster and hit harder!
 
The Wenches are proud to welcome three fantastic new additions to their roster: Squirrel!, ShanPain, and Raspberry Slam. ShanPain comes to the Wenches from neighboring league Tilted Thunder and brings with her fantastic banked track experience. All of our fresh meat have worked night and day to prepare for a Sockit Wench joyride.
 
Sockit Wenches on the rise this 2011 season include names you’ve seen but now you’ll never forget. Trouble Loves Mimi is the newest Wench to make the All-Star Team and already has stellar blocking statistics against solid teams like Portland and Denver. Ima Handful is proud to be the assistant coach of the All-Star Team as well as a trusted Wench jammer and blocker. Additionally, a number of our Wenches have become Rain of Terror standouts and you’ll see this in home season play: Penny Racer with her jamming and blockers Sevier, Belle Tolls, and Caddie Smack.

Season 7 Team Preview: Derby Liberation Front

Make no mistake, Derby Liberation Front is coming out swinging – figuratively, of course, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be gentle. From back-to-back season champions to the league’s underdog, we’ve seen it all, and we’re back to show you what revolution is all about. Somewhere between a bloodless coup and out-and-out guerilla warfare, we’ve rediscovered the magic combination of teamwork, off-skates training, and the on-skates ass-kicking you know and love.

But who is DLF? Co-Captains are Kitty Kamikaze, boasting her 7th season with DLF with 3 seasons as a Rat City All-Star, and Yoko Onoud’int, a Rain of Terror skater who won MVP in her first game. With Ho Chi Danh returning as coach and original DLF captain Ida Slapter running the bench, DLF’s veteran line-up is as solid as our walls on the track. Powerhouses Cassassin, Foxy Throwdown, and Ivana Clobber, known for their tenacity in defense and sneak attacks on offense, lead the pack of returning skaters with Libby Raider, BomBarb, Flamin’ Ginger, Know Mercy, and Domino Scarvy.

You’ll also notice a lot of new faces on the track. This year’s rookies are Annie Warhead, AviHater, Lucinda Pack, Rumble Fist, and Seditious Heart, and all have proven their worth from the start. Rumble has crazy derby instincts and an innate ability to play with her team. Sid and Lucy have a fire inside of them and there’s no end to their intensity and aggression. Warhead and Hater bring speed and determination to their game, and their learning curves shows no signs of leveling off. Keep an eye out on these women during this season. You WILL be impressed.

A crew of transfer skaters have also joined DLF and also snagged spots as Rat City All-Stars. Corre Caminos, formerly of the O-Town Derby Dames; Glitter, formerly of Jet City Rollergirls and Santa Cruz Derby Girls; Goodie Two Skates, formerly of the Rose City Rollers; and Method of Madness, from the Salt City Derby Girls; have all helped keep DLF’s foundation solid. Corre has stunned fans with her poise and incredible ability to skate through big hits and suddenly clear the pack with a smile on her face. Method is a utility-player force, and hands down one of the most determined athletes on the league. Goodie and Glitter don’t know what it means to quit and prove time and time again that they give everything they have to their team.

We’re ready for this season. We hope you are. Never underestimate the power of the revolution. Stay tuned for DLF team events because we love to hang with our fans, and be sure to grab a brand new DLF track jacket on the way into the bout!

With less than a week before the first Season 7 league-play bouts, your intrepid Rat City reporters talked with members of all four home teams to get a sense of how they’ve been getting ready for the 2011 season. Throttle Rockets Co-Captain Fighty Almighty took a few minutes to tell RCRG fans what our intergalactic warriors have been up to lately. The Throttle Rockets play the Sockit Wenches in the late bout of our March 19 doubleheader. Get your tickets now!

The Throttle Rockets, affectionately dubbed “The Raiders of Roller Derby,” may be strangers to the championship title, but all of that is about to change. Returning all-stars such as Valtron 3000 (in her seventh season as a TR) and Captain Sirius Mischief add serious gravity to the team’s blocking and jamming. Add to those slickly experienced veterans and a dangerous rookie contingent, including Season 7 Bout 1 (January 2011) MVP recipient Missile America and newcomer Luna Negra, and you have some explosive jamming possibilities. The TRs scored some additional jammer fuel with the recent addition Eva Dead, a seasoned transfer skater from Chicago’s Windy City Rollers.

The roster also includes stalwarts like Fighty Almighty and Killah Kelly, a recent transfer from Maui’s Pacific Rollergirls, who are ready and willing to alternately pound out some hits or don the star. The TRs heavy hitters include veterans Slutnik, Hard Cora, and QuarterBoy, who offer a defensive reckoning that few can pass while remaining upright. Former Throttle Rocket Dirty Little Secret (coach) and Lexi Luthor (bench manager and former NSO who crossed over to the dark side) will be on the bench, keeping the TR Machine well-oiled and focused on the prize: The 2011 Championship.

Grave Danger’s ReAnimateHer took a few minutes to tell RCRG fans what Everyone’s Worst Nightmare has been up to lately. Grave Danger plays the Derby Liberation Front in the early bout of our March 19 doubleheader. Get your tickets now!

In 2011 Grave Danger, as usual, is out for blood. And we put the work behind it. We have high expectations of each other and ourselves. We keep each other accountable and maintain higher standards, both for practice attendance and off skates workouts. Never ones to complain, the team consistently meets these standards and then some. It’s been said that we are the fittest team on Rat City, and we humbly agree.

When we pick up new teamates, it’s more that just skating skill that we want, we look for skaters who can really become another piece of our talented puzzle, both on and off the track. We are so lucky to have a balance of women who are aggressive, smart, patient, and team players! Our roster season is a derby coach’s dream. Grave Danger prides itself on having utility players, skaters who can play offense, defense, jam, and sometimes all at once! Every player contributes something whether it be hard hits, scoring points, on track teamwork, and of course, doing their part for the less-glamourous side of derby– the spreadsheets and conference calls.

We don’t call our new skaters ‘fresh meat’– we immediately call them teammates! In the pre-season, Danger picked up Stella Borracha and Tempura Tantrum. Stella has amazing speed and jammer agility and Tem is excelling at pack play, with top-notch communication and awareness, all while taking out jammers with solid hits. From the Rat Lab, we’ve drafted Dee Cap Attack and very recently Ponyboi Hurtis. Dee Cap has really become a utility player– she jams and blocks, and we’re excited to develop Ponyboi into another piece of the puzzle. Additionally, former Windy City Roller Loco Chanel is Grave Danger’s most recent transfer, and she has blended with our team so quickly, we swear that she has been here for years!! Thanks WCR, we will continue to enjoy her derby intelligence, and positivity! Oh and big hits!

Injury is a part of derby, but aside from all of our bumps and bruises, our teammate Mona Agony out on injury for most of the season. However, she’s become an amazing assistant coach during practice and on the bench during games… teamates like that are priceless!

The 2011 season has awoken some evil stars of the track like Muffstache, Shorty Ounce, and Nikole Plated! Our team has so many strengths, but fundamentally it comes down to each of our individual skater’s effort to be her best, then we put it all together for our shared goal of success. We are also so proud of the fans that come out to every game, fill our sections of the stands, and cheer for us! We know our fans can see from their seats just how much we value our teamwork, and we appreciate them and their big bloody sparkly signs!

Grave Danger has an upcoming BINGO night at the Rendezvous in Belltown on March 26, so please support and hang with your favorite undead team. Wild West Showdown– All Stars & Rain of Terror Each Bring Home a Big Win

The Rat City Rollergirls travelled to Bremerton last weekend to compete in the Wild West Showdown, a multibout derbypalooza weekend hosted by the Slaughter County Roller Vixens.

The All-Stars had three games, and despite dropping the first two to West Region rivals, Denver’s  Mile High Club (140-118) and Rose City’s Wheels of Justice (165-78), they closed the weekend a high note, defeating Philly Rollergirls’ Liberty Belles 157-111. The Liberty Belles have competed at the WFTDA Championship Tournament for each of the past 3 years, and finished fourth overall in 2010.

The Rain of Terror, Rat City Rollergirls secondary travel team, also played this weekend in two 30-minute challenge bouts. On Saturday, they made it rain all over Jet City’s B-52s: 109-17. On Sunday, they faced stiffer competition against “High Octane”, a Pacific Northwest superteam made up of all-star skaters from Rat City, Oly Rollers, and other nearby leagues. Rain of Terror lost 159-20, but they fought hard whistle-to-whistle.

Rat City and Rose City Split Wins in Sibling Rivalry

Can’t get enough action in our usual double-headers? Try a quadruple-header! On February 19, the Rat City Rollergirls hosted all of Portland’s Rose City Rollers’ local teams for an exciting 4-by-4 home team showdown. The matchups for each of the 30-minute minibouts were set by last year’s end-of-season standings. Each league took home two wins and two losses, full recaps are below.

Derby Liberation Front 92 — Breakneck Betties 46

The opening bout saw our Derby Liberation Front take on Rose City’s Breakneck Betties. From the opening whistle, DLF came out with guns blazing, putting 37 points on the board in the first four jams on the legs of Corre Caminos, Method of Madness, and recent Rose City transfer Goodie TwoSkates. Despite some strong jamming from the Betties’ Soulfearic Acid and Northern Lights, DLF was relentless in their defense, led by by front-of-the-pack wrecking balls Glitter HitHer and Ivana Clobber. They took home their first win in Seattle since 2009.

With 54 points in just 6 times with the star, the Breakneck Betties named Corre Caminos MVP for the Derby Liberation Front.

Throttle Rockets 96 —  Guns N’ Rollers 27

Exploding to an 18-0 lead after jam 2, the Throttle Rockets were in control of their game against the Guns N’ Rollers from the get go. Similar to DLF’s opening bout, solid, consistent offense and punishing defense was the name of the game here. The Rockets Sirius (Mischief and Smack), Hard Cora, Fighty Almighty and Slutnik kept the pack on lockdown, only allowing a single scoring pass for the Guns jammers, if they let them out at all. But the heavy defense was a two-way street—the Guns were able to keep pace and narrow the gap to 36-22 with about 10minutes to go. At that point though, the Throttle Rockets put it into overdrive, shooting down the Guns with a a 60-5 run. Valtron 3000 turned on the afterburners with a 30-0 romp, and Windy City transfer Eva Dead closed out the bout with a 14-0 run in her Key Arena debut.

Guns N’ Rollers named Killah Kelly MVP for the Throttle Rockets for her aggressive blocking and impressive RCRG debut.

Heartless Heathers 95 — Grave Danger 89

In the third bout of the night, Grave Danger opened it up with a modest 8-5 lead in the first few jams. However, it soon became clear that this game wasn’t going to be as one-sided as the previous two when the Heartless Heathers completely capitalized on a power jam and pack-advantage opportunity with White Flight taking a 24-0 run. Sprung from the box, Carmen Getsome answered back with a 15-0 to take it 29-24. Danger shortly retook the lead with Katarina Whip, Georgia O’Grief and ReAnimateHer putting points on the board and heavy blocking by Sara Problem and sHedonist to keep the Heathers at bay. With about 5 minutes left on the clock, the score read 72-48, but two solid back-to-back jams by Heathers Tekillya and Mercy brought the score to 78-67 with one jam to go. Danger put Shorty Ounce on the line, but a track cut major gave Heather jammer Twat Rocket the chance to catch up. Calling it after a 15 point run, the Heathers celebrated a victory until Shorty Ounce’s 4 points prior to her box trip were tallied, tying the score and requiring an overtime jam. Unfortunately, Danger started the overtime jam (full two minutes, with jammers scoring on the first pass) in the worst possible scenario—jammer and two blockers in the box. While Shorty Ounce managed to get one scoring pass, and despite Georgia O’Grief’s killer defense as the only Danger blocker on the track for the full 2 minutes, the Heather jammer managed another pass and a half to end it 96-89.

High Rollers 90 — Sockit Wenches 30

In the last mini-bout of the evening, each city’s 2010 league champion teams, the High Rollers for Rose City, and Rat City’s Sockit Wenches, faced off. The High Rollers drew first blood, with a 9-0 jam by Wreck Deckard out of the gates. The Sockit Wenches, seemingly unstoppable in Rat City league play, were neutralized by the tight green High Roller walls, especially when on the wrong side of a pack-advantage situation. By jam 8, it was 57-13 Rollers, even with usual go-to girls like X-Khan, Juliet Bravo, Rebel Belle, and Anya Heels having worn the star. The Wench pack tightened up their defense in the second half of the bout, with some fierce blocking by Trouble Loves Mimi, Juliet Bravo and X-Khan, holding the High Rollers scoreless for 7 out of the last 11 jams. However, it was a case of too little, too late, as the High Rollers early lead proved to be insurmountable in 30 short minutes.

The High Rollers named Shovey Chase MVP for the Sockit Wenches for her brickwall-like blocking in the pack.

Mark your calendars as the Rat City Rollergirls hit the track, competing in the first official bouts of the season to determine home team standings. Each team will compete in their normal, one-hour long bouts with league standings at stake. Teams have boosted their rosters with well-known talent from sister leagues and picked up spectacular new talent from RCRG’s own Rat Lab division.  With all four teams on even playing ground, expectations are high and competition is at an all-time stiffness.

Can the Sockit Wenches win back to back titles? Could Derby Liberation Front recapture what once was the glory of being undefeated? Will Grave Danger rise from last year’s ashes to finally capture the elusive Championship trophy? Or will the Throttle Rockets launch out of the pack and defeat them all with silent determination? Montreal upsets All-Stars, 110-103

Montreal Roller Derby’s New Skids on the Block, the neon darlings of WFTDA’s East Region, upset the Rat City All-Stars, 110-103 on February 11^th in closed bout at our practice facility. The All-Stars are currently ranked 5^th in the West Region and the Skids are ranked 7^th in the East. The Skids are doing a Pacific Northwest tour this weekend and are playing Oly Rollers’ Cosa Nostras and the Jet City Bombers on the trip.

Both teams started out with heavy defense, getting a feel for each other, but Montreal drew the first blood with a 3-0 by Ewan Wotarmy in jam 2.  Rat City answered back in jam 3 with a 9-0 by Primp Daddy to bring the All-Stars to a 9-3 lead. The next couple jams had Montreal chipping away with short, clean 2-0s, but the All-Stars seemed to run away with it in jams 6 and 7—a 27-0 attack by Carmen Getsome, followed by a 15-0 romp by Juliet Bravo—bringing the score to 51-7 just 10 minutes in. All-Star rookie Shorty Ounce made her presence felt on the track during that jam with some incredibly solid frontline defense, keeping Montreal’s Cheese Grater in the pack.

For rest of the first half, the All-Stars and Skids traded lead calls and quick single scoring pass jams, but Montreal managed to chip away at the All-Stars’ lead a bit (48 points at its highest), ending the half 74-41, Rat City.

The Skids must have eaten their Wheaties (or maybe poutine?) during halftime because they certainly Brought It in the second half. A 19-0 rally by Iron Wench in jam 2 to took them them to 74-60. Montreal kept up their relentless offense and punishing defense, led by Jess Bandit, Smack Daddy and Lil Mama. In the first twelve jams of the second half, they kept the All-Stars to a mere four points, while putting 43 points of their own on the board, taking the lead 84-78. Losing the lead was the wake-up call that Rat City needed, as they immediately answered back with a 15-0 jam from Juliet Bravo, featuring some killer blocking by Shorty Ounce (sound familiar?), holding Georgia W. Tush in the pack for three scoring passes.  However this 93-84 lead was far from comfortable, and the tenacious Montreal team cut Rat City’s lead to two points, 99-97, going into jam 20. They put their go-to girl, Iron Wench, on the track against a boxed Juliet Bravo, and she made light work of a light Rat City pack with a 13-4 run, taking the lead back for Montreal, 110-103.

With six seconds on the clock, the All-Stars’ bench immediately called a time out to force one more jam, and Wile E. Peyote lined up against Ewan Wotarmy. Unfortunately for the All-Stars, they had only had two blockers on the track to Montreal’s four, and as soon as the Montreal jammer was called lead, she called the jam, final score 110-103.

The Rat City All-Stars are next in action for three bouts at the Wild West Showdown in Bremerton, WA, March 5^th and 6^th. They’ll be playing two games on March 5^th—Denver Roller Dolls’ Mile High Club at 12pm and Rose City Rollers’ Wheels of Justice at 8pm. On Sunday March 6^th, they face the Philly Rollergirls’ Liberty Belles at 5pm. On April 16^th, the Rat City All-Stars will be hosting the B. A. D. All-Stars from the San Francisco Bay Area at Key Arena. Tickets for that bout are on sale now!

Rat City’s All-Stars and Rain of Terror Bring Home the Win!

Rat City All-Stars kick off 2011 season with a 122-66 win over Detroit Derby Girls

Rain of Terror defeats Dockyard Derby Dames’ Wave of Mutilation 161-78

The Rat City All-Stars and Rain of Terror kicked off their 2011 seasons on February 5, and both teams got solid wins over their opponents. The All-Stars hosted the Detroit Derby Girls (DDG), ranked #4 in the WFTDA North Central region, and got a solid 122-66 win. Rain of Terror hosted neighboring Tacoma’s Dockyard Derby Dames’ all-star team, the Wave of Mutilation and similarly served them a 161-78 loss. DDG is in the midst of their “Northwest Passage” tour, and are also playing Rose City’s Wheels of Justice and the Oly Rollers’ Cosa Nostra Donnas this weekend.

The All-Stars opened the bout with a textbook 4-0 jam from Carmen Getsome. After 0-0 in jam 2, Detroit’s Cookie Rumble answered back with 4-0. For the next 6 jams, the All-Stars and Detroit traded lead jammer status, power jams, and leads until jam 11, when Primp Daddy opened the door with a 12-0 jam (including a sweet juke between Detroit’s Del Bomber and Cool Whip) to make it 31-12 midway through the first half. A 9-0 jam by Racer McChaser brought Detroit within 15 points, but that was the closest they would get that afternoon. Corre Caminos, making her All-Star debut, was true to her namesake the “road runner”, putting 18 points on the board over two back-to-back jams, cooling her heels in the penalty box in the middle.  At the end of the first half, the score read 58-22 Rat City.

The All-Stars opened the second half by completely locking down on defense and maximizing offense—going on a 50-4 tear for the first 7 jams of the second half to 108-26.  ReAnimateHer, Juliet Bravo, Glitter HitHer, and Goodie Two Skates, (the latter two making their debut with Rat City All-Stars) were key parts of this punishing defense. With about 15 minutes left in the game, Detroit came alive again, with Effin Money and Boo D. Livers putting points on the board and ramping up the defense to keep the All-Star jammers stuck in the pack or limited to a single scoring pass. However, this last push (Detroit had a 40-14 run at the end of the second half) was too late, with the final score putting Rat City on top, 122-66.

Proving there’s no rest for the wicked (or wickedly awesome); the Rat City All-Stars are in action again this Friday, February 11, playing host to Montreal’s New Skidz on the Block. Rain of Terror, the rest of the best Rat City team, started off slow against the Wave of Mutilation, with the Wave jumping to a 21-3 lead after 4 jams. However Rain of Terror struck back almost immediately with four lead jam calls, and four big jams by Penny Racer, Yoko Onoudi’nt, Missile America, and Muffstache to bring it to 39-21.  Once Rain of Terror seized the lead, they never looked back, keeping the Wave to a mere 4 more points for the rest of the half, the score reading 92-25 at halftime.

Both teams started the second half with heavier defense, allowing only one scoring pass per jam, but Rain of Terror managed to grow their lead to 104-32, five jams in. However, in the next jam, the Wave’s Anita Hit Sum Won maximized her power jam by putting 19 points on the board, taking it to 108-51, with about 20 minutes left. Rain of Terror immediately answered back, with a 23-0 run in the next two jams, bringing the score to 131-51. Rain of Terror expanded their jammer rotation in the last 15 minutes, with both captain Foxy Throwdown and Sara Problem wearing the star and putting points on the board. With solid defense (with some great hits by Nikole Plated, IRockIt, and Missile America—while both jamming and blocking), and consistently strong offense, Rain of Terror came out on top 161-78.

All-Star team kicks off their 2011 Season

The Rat City Rollergirls All-Star team kicks off their 2011 Season this weekend with their first WFTDA-ranked game against the Detroit Derby Girls All-Star Team. Next weekend, RCRG All-Stars face the Montreal Rollergirls and set the pace for their 2011 rankings. Check back for bout recaps, they’ll be posted as soon as the dust has settled!

Join our Ranks: Tryouts February 12th

We are always looking for strong athletes to join our ranks. Our next tryout is at our practice facility on Saturday, February 12 from 1-4 p.m. (doors open and registration begin at noon).

Roller derby is a fast-paced, hard-hitting, endurance-based sport that takes lots of physical and mental ability, time, and sheer dedication. If you think you have what it takes, consider attending one of our tryouts to show us what you’ve got.

There will be two pre-tryouts open practices on Monday, January 31 and Monday, February 7 from 8-10 p.m. at the Rat City Rollergirls practice facility, the Rat’s Nest; the drop-in fee to attend is $10 per practice.

Sibling Rivalry: The Rat City Rollergirls vs. Rose City Rollers

Seattle Fans, mark your calendars for the ultimate roller derby rivalry when the Rat City Rollergirls take on their sisters to the south, Rose City Rollers (Port. OR) in what will be an epic battle on the track, Saturday, February 19, 5:30 p.m. at the KeyArena. GET TICKETS NOW!

It’s a rivalry that started back in 2005 when Rose City home teams traveled up I-5 to take on the home teams of Rat City and only grew when Rat City traveled down I-5 to Portland in 2006 to return the favor. Of those early games, Rat City home teams were victorious in all but one bout. Then both leagues established All-Star teams and the rivalry intensified between these Northwest powerhouses.

This Northwest rivalry will push teams to perform at top-athletic intensity. Competition is stiff, players are hungry and fans are simply ravenous to see their home team, or in this case, teams win. That is exactly what the Sockit Wenches, Grave Danger, Throttle Rockets and Derby Liberation Front plan to do, WIN!

Wii video Game featuring Rat City Rollergirls Released January 24th

Jam City Rollergirls, the first video game officially licensed by the WFTDA, will be available for download starting January 24th on Nintendo’s WiiWare. Gamers can compete in wild and entertaining environments as their favorite derby skaters on actual WFTDA teams.

Blood on the Banked Track

On Sunday January 23rd, Grave Danger heads South to Los Angeles to take on the L.A. Derby Dolls home team the Varsity Brawlers in an interleague competition. Will Grave Danger’s flat track derby skills translate to a victory on the banked track? Watch the action live on Derby News Network at 4PM PST and cheer on the black and red.

As a preview to the bank tracked action, tune in Saturday January 22nd at 8PM PST on Derby News Network to see some of your favorite Rat City Rollergirls skaters play with Team Legit, a team of flat-track skaters from around the country that take their skills to the banked track. Team Legit plays the L.A. Derby Dolls Ri-Ettes.

Rain of Terror hits the road: Alaska and Vancouver bound

Rain of Terror, Rat City’s second travel team will be hitting the road North the next two weekends to play non-WFTDA sanctioned bouts. First up, Rain of Terror heads way North to take on the Fairbanks Rollergirls in Fairbanks, Alaska on January 22nd. Can’t afford the flight?  Tune in Saturday at 7p.m. (Alaska time) to watch the Rain of Terror bring the thunder on a live boutcast on www.b2tv.com (cost is $8).

The following weekend, Rain of Terror heads North to Canada to take on Terminal City Rollergirls in Vancouver, B.C. on January 29th.

This survey is designed to help the WFTDA and its individual member leagues understand the modern roller derby audience.

The survey collects demographic data, basic consumer habits, and opinions about the state of the sport. It should only take a few minutes to complete.

Participating in this survey will supply valuable information to your favorite local league, as well as to the modern roller derby community as a whole.

Fans and skaters of non-WFTDA leagues – male or female – are also invited to participate in this survey.

Survey participants may optionally enter a drawing to win a gift pack of WFTDA swag. Ten winners will be selected at random after the survey closes Sunday, January 30th and will be notified by email.

Sockit Wenches win Season 7 Charity Bout

Over 6,000 fans packed KeyArena to watch the Sockit Wenches win the largest purse for their charity Queer Youth Space in the Season 7 Opening Charity Bout. Team matches were initially determined by the 2010 Season 6 standings. In the first two bouts, Grave Danger beat the Throttle Rockets (59-31), and the Sockit Wenches eeked out a win against Derby Liberation Front (74-64). In the match for third and forth place, the Throttle Rockets skated to victory over DLF (83-25). In a nail biter of a last match, Sockit Wenches took home first place by beating Grave Danger (52-49)
